His stories led to the arrest and conviction of the murderers of civil rights activist Medgar Evers, and those responsible for the Birmingham, Alabama Church bombing in 1963 decades after they committed their crimes. He has since received a MacArthur Genius Grant and founded the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting.
