In podcast Uit de Kunst's first try-out episode, Geert Vlieger and co-host Krista Jongsma speak with the UK born, Amsterdam based, multidisciplinary artist Lawrence James Bailey. It is the ambiguous non-places that interest Lawrence James Bailey. Whereas in his earlier work he focused on the border area between city and countryside and the rugged no man’s land that typifies this transitional zone, this summer he is looking for the urban wilderness of Amsterdam. ‘The city is human territory, entirely designed and organized, and yet weeds still grow between the paving stones. I am searching for the often unnoticed places where culture and nature collide or merge into one another in a messy limbo.’ During the summer, Lawrence has been transforming Galerie Bart into a research centre where he collects materials and arranges them in relation to one another, makes drawings and textile works and shows the results. A place that is a cross between a studio and an exhibition space, while also being the base from which he explores the city on his bicycle. • • • In de eerste try-out aflevering van podcast Uit de Kunst, spreken Geert Vlieger en co-host Krista Jongsma met de in het Verenigd-Koninkrijk geboren, in Amsterdam gevestigde, multidisciplinaire kunstenaar Lawrence James Bailey. Het zijn de dubbelzinnige 'non-plaatsen' die Lawrence James Bailey interesseren. Waar hij zich in zijn eerdere werk concentreerde op het grensgebied tussen stad en platteland en het ruige niemandsland dat deze overgangszone typeert, ging hij deze zomer op zoek naar de stedelijke wildernis van Amsterdam. ‘De stad is menselijk territorium, volledig ontworpen en georganiseerd, en toch groeit er nog steeds onkruid tussen de straatstenen. Ik ben op zoek naar de vaak onopgemerkte plekken waar cultuur en natuur in een rommelige limbo botsen of in elkaar overvloeien.' Gedurende de zomer heeft Lawrence Galerie Bart omgetoverd tot een onderzoekscentrum waar hij materialen verzamelt en in relatie tot elkaar plaatst, tekeningen en textielwerken creëert en de resultaten tentoonstelt. Een plek die een kruising vormt tussen een atelier en een tentoonstellingsruimte, maar ook de uitvalsbasis is van waaruit hij op de fiets de stad verkent.
