In this session Dr. Erik Pajtinka will explain the present functions of military diplomacy and how his analytical framework helps to increase our understanding of what military diplomacy is. He moreover discusses the potential conceptual demarcations between gunboat diplomacy and coercive diplomacy. This session is hosted by Hester Postma, project officer on Military Diplomacy. About the expert: Dr. Erik Pajtinka is a lecturer at the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy of the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations of the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica (Slovakia) and an external lecturer at the Institute of Political Science of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic). In the past he was a visiting scholar at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations “Clingendael” in the Hague (Netherlands) and a lecturer at the Faculty of International Relations of the Economic University in Bratislava (Slovakia). In his research he specializes in issues of current theory and practice of diplomacy, particularly bilateral diplomacy and diplomacy of the European Union.
