This episode is a recording of the event 'In conversation with Ghassan Abu Sittah' held in Pakhuis de Zwijger, Amsterdam, on 17 May 2024. Moderator and The Rights Forum board member Berber van der Woude speaks with British Palestinian surgeon Ghassan Abu-Sittah about his time working in Gaza. He recounts how he witnessed how the Israeli assault on Gaza transformed from a war into a genocide, with the deliberate targeting and destruction of Gaza’s health care system. In the second part we speak about the attempts by European countries to silence his testimony by imposing a Schengen wide entry-ban on him. With a panel of experts we discuss the broader trend of anti-Palestinian repression and infringement of the freedom of speech in Europe. Sara Galli is an anaesthesiologist in The Hague and part of Doctors for Gaza, a Dutch collective committed to an end to violence, protection of healthcare, access to emergency aid and reconstruction of the destroyed healthcare system in Gaza. Tobias den Haan works for the European Legal Support Center (ELSC) , the only independent organisation defending and empowering the Palestine solidarity movement in Europe through legal means. He will provide us with facts and figures on the suppression of Palestine solidarity activists in Europe. Wieland Hoban is a composer and academic translator. He is chairman of the German organization ‘Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East’ and was co-organizer of the recently banned ‘Palaëstina Kongress’ in Berlin. As a result, his organization saw its bank account closed. Marloes van Noorloos is associate professor of criminal law at Leiden University specialised in research, teaching and human rights advocacy.
